How to Prep for Your Dance Photoshoot
Photoshoot coming up? We’ve got you.
At Fluid Frames, we know stepping in front of the camera can be exciting, a little nerve-wracking, and a lot of fun — all at once. Whether you're prepping for audition photos, senior portraits, or company shots, here are a few simple tips to help you feel confident and ready.
1. Know What You’re Shooting For
Not all dance sessions are the same. Are you taking audition photos? Senior photos? Team portraits? Knowing what your session is for will help guide everything — from what you wear to how you pose.
Need a little extra time to work through multiple goals? We offer extended session options if you want to capture more looks or take it slow.
2. Pick Your Outfits Early
Outfits matter, and they photograph differently than they look in the mirror.
- Choose looks that fit you well and feel good to move in.
- Try them on ahead of time — down to shoes, undergarments, and accessories and give yourself time to swap anything that doesn’t feel right.
- If you’re bringing more than one look, organize them in a way that makes quick changes easy.
Want more VARIETY in your gallery? You can always add extra outfits to your session when booking.
Want more HANDS-ON help? You can book our in-house stylist to walk with you through making decisions and creating impactful looks.
3. Practice a Few Poses
You don’t need to choreograph your entire shoot, but it helps to have a few solid poses in mind.
- Think about the movements or shapes you love and that show your strengths.
- Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself to fine-tune what looks best.
- Bring multiple ideas with you to show us. We’ll guide you from there!
4. Hair & Makeup Basics
Go with a style that fits the session:
- For audition or portrait sessions, a clean and polished look goes a long way.
- For team or performance-style shoots, something bold and stage-ready might work better.
Not confident doing your own? We offer hair & makeup as an upgrade — just ask us when booking.
- Also, bring a small kit with essentials (hair ties, bobby pins, blotting paper, etc.) for touch-ups.
5. Arrive Early, Warm Up, and Breathe
Give yourself at least 10–15 minutes before your session to settle in, get changed, and warm up your body.
Moving through your poses is a lot easier when your muscles feel ready (...and you’ll feel more relaxed in front of the camera, too).
6. Let Go and Have Fun
Here’s the truth: the best photos happen when you're just being yourself.
We’ll guide you, pose you, and adjust as we go — but when you're relaxed, confident, and having fun, it shows.
Love more than you expected? You can always add extra images after your shoot.
